Sound Intensity Meters, Measurement and Probes
Sound intensity probes are directional, so you can isolate and measure individual noise sources in reverberant sound fields, i.e. factories, plant rooms etc. For example you could analyse the noise from a pump driven by a noisy electric motor and gearbox.
Sound level meter microphones are omnidirectional, by design, so the measurement of sound power requires anechoic or fully reverberant rooms. Sound intensity probes, on the other hand, enable you to derive the sound power from the measured sound intensity of a noise source in the work place.
Sound intensity measurements generally fall into two categories, the survey and the precision method, as specified in BS EN ISO 9614
